Renowned San Diego Architectural Firm Announces Management Changes and New Location
Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects, for 34 years a leader in design of the region's advanced technology, academic and community projects, today announced a management transition made with an eye toward the future.
James T. Ferguson has been named the new President of the firm. Ferguson was hired as a draftsman 25 years ago, and was named a Principal in 1996. Through the years he has become respected for his intense work ethic and passion for sustainable design. He has an expertise in designing cGMP production facilities, and is the principal designer for many of the region's largest and most successful biotechnology manufacturing facilities. He is a member of BIOCOM, the trade group for Southern California's life sciences industry, and past president of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE), San Diego Chapter. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional.
Ferguson succeeds Kennon W. Baldwin, who has been with the firm since it was founded by Jim McGraw as a two-man shop in 1976, and has been president since 1996. Baldwin will remain active in the company along with Philip Pape and Andy Darragh as firm principles. According to Ferguson, the management transition is part of a long-term plan for the longevity of the firm, in which new opportunities for growth and advancement can develop, just as its four architectural principals have done.
"Ferguson Pape Baldwin is here to help our clients design their future. As a firm, we must manage ourselves with an eye toward the future to ensure that we will continue to be here to guide our clients and help them fulfill their vision and goals," said Baldwin. "This is not an indication of any horizon for my involvement at the company," he said.
The firm has also designed a number of unique facilities enjoyed by the general public, including the new elephant habitat at the San Diego Zoo and eight community libraries around the region.
All of these projects, as well as the firm's transition plan, show Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects is committed to being a service company, Baldwin said. "We don't have one particular architectural style - we capitalize on our ability to communicate with our clients and help them visualize their goals."
In conjunction with the management transition, the firm has moved to its newly owned headquarters at 4499 Ruffin Road in Kearney Mesa. The new location positions the firm closer to the core of its client base and is another step by the firm to favorably affect its future, Ferguson said. "We have taken advantage of the real estate market and purchased our own building where we will continue to grow FPBA and potentially share space with complementary service companies".
"Over the years what has intrigued me in the firm's work is its connection to science and the business of high technologies," Ferguson said. In his years at the firm he has designed over 10 million square feet of space. "My forte has become dealing with intellectually rich projects that are cutting edge and first of their kind in the industry," he said. "That is also what the firm has become known for, which is an expertise that puts us above the competition and in greater demand," he said.
Among those first-of-its-kind projects was Idec's biologics manufacturing facility in Torrey Pines, where the life-saving drug Rituxan became the first biotech product approved by the FDA for cancer. Here it was made for clinical trials, and once approved, for the U.S. market. The firm also designed what is now Genentech's manufacturing campus in Oceanside, where (6) buildings are connected with a "spine" to better integrate functions in manufacturing monoclonal antibody technologies used in products such as the cancer drug Avastin.
Governor Rick Perry joined Texas A&M University System Chancellor Michael D. McKinney, M.D., and University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., today to announce a major cancer research initiative between the institutions. The new collaboration will combine the resources of the A&M System's National Center for Therapeutic Manufacturing and UT's MD Anderson Cancer Center to develop new cancer-fighting drugs and accelerate the process of getting new cancer treatments to patients.
The NCTM is the state of Texas' core biological pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and education facility, now in construction on the Texas A&M University campus. Once complete, researchers from both university systems will utilize the NCTM's first-in-class resources to produce vaccines and therapies for clinical use in the fight against cancer.
"The war against cancer is one of the defining conflicts of our time, and I'm proud to stand with these dedicated professionals as they combine forces to open a new front in that war," said Perry. "The combined efforts of these two technology super-powers bode well for the future of medicine in Texas, and offer a new message of hope to those whose lives have been touched by cancer."
Through this agreement, MD Anderson will become a long-term partner and collaborator of the NCTM, increasing the ability of researchers from its laboratories to quickly provide important new cancer vaccines and treatments, including vaccines targeted to specific individuals. MD Anderson's leadership will be integrally involved in the NCTM's design, including the development of a cancer research core made possible by the state-of-the-art therapeutics capabilities of the site's modular clean room "pods." MD Anderson also will be a vital member of the NCTM's scientific board, and the two institutions will collaborate on future grant and funding initiatives to advance cancer research.
"This partnership exemplifies the clear commitment of both systems to utilizing our research and educational resources to the fullest in service to our global community," said McKinney. "MD Anderson and the NCTM are and will be the standard-setters in their research areas. Combining the capabilities of these two institutions will radically advance the search for a cancer solution in this generation."
"This is a wonderful day for Texas and for global health," said Cigarroa. "We are celebrating the collaboration of two great university systems joined in battle against one of the most feared diseases of our time. And with this connection, we mark the potential for new victories over this old enemy. We also reflect on the power of human intelligence and higher education to overcome obstacles and chart new paths for medicine and our economy."
"The MD Anderson and NCTM collaboration, in conjunction with NCTM's partner Institute for Innovative Therapeutics programs--the Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies and Texas A&M Institute for Genomic Medicine--creates an unmatched biomedical cancer research enterprise capable of taking products from the fundamental research stage through the production process and into clinical trials," said Dr. Brett Giroir, vice chancellor for research and executive director of the IIT, which leads the A&M System's multiple state-of-the-art research facilities. "It will not only serve as a global hub for cancer therapeutics research, manufacturing and process optimization, but as the cornerstone for undergraduate and graduate training of the future professionals who will lead the next generation of biotechnology research."
"Scientific advances have put more effective, highly tailored therapies in reach for our cancer patients, said Raymond DuBois, M.D., Ph.D., provost and executive vice president at MD Anderson. "But the promise of individualized treatment also comes with more complex research demands. To exploit our opportunity to vastly improve cancer treatment, we need to share our expertise through strong collaborations, such as this one between MD Anderson and the NCTM. Together, we can find new ways to efficiently and rapidly develop new therapies and get them out of the lab to our patients."
Construction of the NCTM's headquarters facility, funded as a core strategic program by the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, is scheduled for completion in December 2011. The Center will operate under the management of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station. MD Anderson will also hold a seat on both the NCTM and IIT Advisory Boards.

2009 Excellence in Construction Award
The Associated Builders & Contractors, San Diego Chapter held it's 8th Annual Excellence in Contruction Awards ceremony on November 19. 2009 at the IVY Hotel. Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects in cooperation with Ahrens Corporation received the award for their work on the "Elephant Odyssey" at the San Diego Zoo.
The ABC Excellence in Construction Awards program is the premier competition within the construction industry, recognizing outstanding construction projects across the nation. Projects built by ABC member companies are recognized for their exceptional quality, design, and commitment to safety during this annual awards competition.
This project required the relocation of the Operations into a new facility that enhances Operations' Group efficiency, teamwork and cooperation. The challenge started with the conversion of an older existing warehouse building into a new state-of-the-art electronic development and manufacturing facility. This facility needed to entice users to embrace a modular open office environment. 3D design views and animations were developed to enable the design team and users to create, understand and refine the all important physical aspects of the facility. An overhead modular grid system organizes the power, grounding, compressed air, phone and data to supply a multitude of possible manufacturing configurations. A meandering path circulation path takes visitor and employees alike through an exciting open office area to conference rooms, lunch room and the heart of the manufacturing operations. This 65,000 SF, $5.5M facility houses offices, conference rooms, electronic development, assembly spaces, and test areas to work on highly sensitive, customized equipment. Specialty labs include a vibration test and environmental test chambers.
FPBA organized and managed the entire LEED(tm) Certification process. While the original goal was to achieve LEED(tm)-CI (basic) Certification, the team was able to document points for LEED(tm)-CI Gold. Sustainable features include utilizing Energy Star equipment, low-emitting materials, wood that has been sustainably harvested, installing local materials with high recycled content, installing water-efficient fixtures, and designing large circular skylights that provide diffuse light throughout the open office space. In addition, natural lighting was significantly enhanced and huge energy savings (+SDG&E incentives) realized. The ViaSat Operations Building 6 is the first LEED(tm) Certified Project in Carlsbad, California.
BioMed Realty Trust LEED-CS Silver
The LEED(tm) effort for this four-story, 160,000 SF structure was initiated by the owner, Biomed Realty without the knowledge of who the future tenant would be. Sustainable features include one level of subterranean parking, providing sustainable guidelines that future tenants must comply with, installing only low-emitting finishes into the core and shell, and installing a roofing system with a high reflectance value, thus reducing the heat island effect.
LEED(tm) documentation was directly outsourced to Drew George & Partners, Inc. and was originally slated to solely pursue LEED (basic) Certification, but was submitted with enough credits documented to achieve LEED CS Silver.
